Sweet Street // The (Mis)Adventures of AG Dolls Episode 3

Jessi buzzes with excitement as she pulls on her brand-new sweatshirt. She applied for a job at the local coffee shop, Sweet Street, two weeks ago. Three days ago she had her interview. And today is her first day!

Sure, she’s a little nervous, but according to her new manager, she would just be keeping it simple and working the cash register her first day. She already learned how to use it after her interview, after all. Everything would be great!

Izzy is already up, having walked the dog, Apricot, and she shoots Jessi a warm smile as she comes into the kitchen.

“Hey, Jessi. Nervous for your first day at all?”

“Nope,” Jessi says brightly. “Just excited. Do you have any tips for your first day? I mean, you’ve already worked at the pool and at the ski hill, so you would know.”

Izzy pauses and thinks for a moment. “Just be yourself,” she advises. “You’ll do great.”

Jessi nods and grabs one of the muffins she made last night from the counter. “I guess I’m off to work, then!”

shoutout to Reesa’s dolls for playing various extras in this photostory… 🙂

Jessi walks into the coffee shop, and her manager, Katie, looks over.

“Oh, Jessi! Hi!” She looks a bit frazzled, and she sweeps a lock of hair out of her face as she slides a plate of cinnamon rolls into the bake case. “I’m so sorry that I’m throwing you into the deep end on your first day, but Carla, the other girl who was supposed to work here today, just called in sick…so I’m going to have you work the register, mainly, but you’ll have to learn how to make a few drinks.” She spins around and hits a button on one of the coffee makers.

Jessi gulps slightly.

Suddenly, she’s a little more nervous.

There’s not too many people when the coffee shop first opens, but it’s a Saturday with nice weather, so gradually, the small trickle of customers grows to a steady stream.

“Welcome to Sweet Street, what can I get for you today?” Jessi asks as the next customer steps up to the counter.

“Can I get…a large latte with four pumps of vanilla, one and a half pumps of mocha—not two, one and a half, it needs to be one and a half—and three-quarters soy milk and one-quarter almond milk—those are important ratios, don’t forget that—and then a vanilla drizzle on top? Oh, and make it iced.” The customer tilts her chin expectantly.

Jessi stood there helplessly, her fingers limp over the order screen. She got lost somewhere around one and a half pumps of mocha.

Katie comes up next to Jessi and gives the customer a sweet smile. “Good morning, Charlotte. You’ve changed the ratios a little, haven’t you?”

The customer—Charlotte, apparently—tosses her head. “Two-thirds soy and one-third almond was a little off.” She trots over to the waiting area.

“Unfortunately, Charlotte is a regular, so you’ll have to learn to make her drinks pretty well,” Katie says under her breath. “Let me man the register for a little bit. There’s a notecard in the right cupboard with her order on it. Just cross out the two-thirds and one-third and write in three-quarters and one-quarter.”

Jessi hesitantly goes back and pulls out the notecard, then meticulously puts together Charlotte’s drink, being careful to only do one-and-a-half pumps of mocha.

Not nervous. Not nervous at all. This is great.

She slides the drink onto the pickup counter. “Charlotte?”

Charlotte immediately comes over and takes a sip. “Hm. It could be better. But I can cope. Six point five out of ten.” She gives Jessi a short nod and strides away.

What? That’s not Dahlia. You’re crazy.

Sweating slightly from the encounter, Jessi takes her place at the register and pins a smile back on her face. At least now she’s ready for any order that could possibly be thrown at her. “Welcome to Sweet Street! What can I get for you today?”

The girl at the counter smiles pleasantly. “Coffee.”

Bracing herself for more, Jessi poises her fingers over the keypad. “Yes?”

“Just coffee.” The girl nods.

“Well…black coffee? Hot coffee? Iced coffee? A latte, with cream, anything?” Jessi says desperately.

“Sure, all of that sounds good. I’ll pay with card,” the girl says obliviously, pulling out her wallet.

The line has slown down slightly, and Katie is still busy making the drink orders she’d taken, so Jessi stands helplessly in the kitchen, unsure of what to make.

She hesitantly pours a cup of hot coffee and adds vanilla creamer to it.

Jessi stares at the cup of coffee, then puts a lid on it and calls, “Amy?”

The girl walks up, grabs the coffee, and sips it. She wrinkles her nose slightly. “Oh, I was hoping for iced.” She shrugs and walks away.

Jessi is a little dumbfounded.

Jessi smiles again, trying to make it as un-forced as possible. “Welcome to Sweet Street! What can I get for you?”

“I’ll have an iced caramel latte, thank you. Medium. And a lemon bar.”

Jessi breathes a sigh of relief. “Perfect. How will you be paying today?”

She gets the customer the lemon bar and the latte, then gives her a friendly smile.

The customer smiles back, then drops a five-dollar bill into the tip jar. “You have a very lovely smile. I appreciate it!”

Jessi returns to the cash register, unable to stop a beam from spreading over her face.

The rest of the day goes smoothly. Jessi gets the hang of things. No customers complain. Katie congratulates her on work well done.

Maybe the day was slightly eventful, and a little nerve-wracking.

But as Jessi takes a bite of a complimentary cinnamon roll on her way home, she’s pretty sure it was a great day at work.

This was another Adventures Awards photostory! This time, Reesa requested it. And she lent me her dolls in return, so thanks Reesa! I was very happy to write this, because the coffee shop is adorable. I mean, look at this little cup!

So cute, right?

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading this photostory! I always have fun with the (Mis)Adventures series.

What’s your dream job? What’s your go-to order at a coffee shop? Have you made any cute establishments for your dolls?

Thanks for reading!

  1. This is great! Charlotte made me laugh, but Jessi handled her well!
I always like little photostories like this. (Personally, I call them “photoscenes”, scenes from our dolls’ lives, no extravagant plot needed! Though extravagant plots sure are fun too!)
If I went to coffee shops, I’m pretty sure my go-to would be hot chocolate. What’s your go-to?
